Closure of River Plate's Monumental Stadium

The iconic Monumental Stadium of River Plate in Buenos Aires has been temporarily closed after a government inspection found improper use of fireworks during a match. The club faces fines and sanctions from Conmebol, which may affect upcoming competitions.

Closure of River Plate's Monumental Stadium

The Monumental Stadium of River Plate, one of the most emblematic in South America, was closed after an inspection by the Government Control Agency of Buenos Aires City. This unexpected closure was the result of the improper use of pyrotechnics during the welcome at the return match of the Copa Libertadores semifinals.

During the review, more than three thousand 600 flares were found distributed in various areas of the stadium, including fireworks hidden in a disabled bathroom, which worsened the situation. Both local legislation and the Conmebol regulations prohibit the use of pyrotechnics at sporting events, except in specifically authorized areas, a rule that was not respected.

The main reason for the closure of the Monumental was the excessive and uncontrolled use of pyrotechnics, which poses a risk to the safety of attendees. Although the passion of fans to support their team is understandable, these displays exceeded the limits established by both the city and the confederation.

In addition to the closure of the stadium, Conmebol will also impose economic sanctions on the club. In similar situations, penalties range around 80 thousand dollars, as in the recent case of Atlético Mineiro for similar violations in another Copa Libertadores match. It is expected that in the coming days the specific fine that River Plate must pay will be announced.

The temporary closure of the Monumental is a hard blow for the club, which must not only face economic sanctions but also the discontent of its fans. To be able to reopen the stadium, River must pay the fine and process the lifting of the closure with the relevant authorities. In the meantime, the team will not be able to use its stadium for future commitments, which could affect its performance in upcoming competitions.
